WOAW a 5-hour documentary :D Great work all around, I have a few observations about the similarities between North Korean and western media: - You draw attention to how North Korean media tends to encourage women to both work and take care of the home and children, and you point out how that's a really unrealistic expectation that the media pushes onto the women. I'd like to point out that this type of portrayal of women is by no means exclusive to North Korea, though! It's very common in western culture to expect women to simultaneously fulfill the traditionally feminine role of homekeeping + being a good mother AND the traditionally masculine role of earning income and being independent, of having your "own life" outside of the home as well. - Also. I'm from Finland and the repetition of the "greedy landlord and his evil wife" trope really struck me, because the most popular socialist film in my country also has that trope :D The primary difference between Finnish and North Korean socialist films being that the Finnish ones don't end with the triumph of socialism, but rather with the socialist main characters getting martyred (which is historically accurate)

I had a dream recently about a game called "X/II", which was supposed to be some sort of 9/11 joke. Which was strange, since the game itself had barely much to do with the 9/11 attacks and was more about nuclear bombs.

Amazing video! I did not know the channel, but just because of this fantastic video I liked it, subscribed to the channel, and I would press the like botton 1000 times more if I can. Funy, reasonable, deep, simply amazing, really! Congratulations Paper Will!

At 5 and a half hours in, I'd thought there's at least be a 10 second clip of the films on their own without you interjecting. Constructive criticism; if the focus of the piece is NK entertainment, you should at least make _some_ room for the actual entertainment without interjecting and planting your own ideas and guiding what the audience should think of it. The audience should decide what's funny or isn't. The clips on their own are a treasure trove of rare content many haven't seen and would've gone a lot farther if you just let them play on their own without constantly interjecting over them. Title of this piece is more along the lines of "What I Think of Entertainment Made By North Korea" than "Entertainment Made By North Korea".

Imagine being at a party, chatting with someone. The topic of South Korean film comes up, and then they muse aloud "I wonder what North Korean film is like." Out of nowhere a head pops out from behind a corner. "North Korean film?!" he shouts. "Let me regale you with a story of propaganda, kidnapping, and war, the results of 18 months of research!" This is how I imagine it would look like if I was the one who decided to trade sanity for an incomprehensible amount of knowledge about North Korean film. I'm glad it was you that decided to undertake this, and that I get the 5 hour and 28 minute version. I'm sure my friends are glad too. On behalf of me and my friends, thanks for your dedication and sacrifice. It is greatly appreciated.

I come back to watch this a year later (since im getting into watching more video essays and niche creators) and all i can think about when it comes to animators for anime is the one episode of kirby right back at ya called cartoon bafoon The episode literally incapsulates (whether intentionally or unintentionally) the bureaucracy and abuse animators must face when it comes to how much work they do for so little pay

This is the world i grew up in, I was born half a year after 9/11 and a lot of my early childhood was exposed to these types of flash games. Typically ones that had PNG's of real people like Bush or Bin Laden's head on a poorly drawn body. Though due to it being a few years after 9/11 (2006-2008) a lot of them were more focused on the Iraq War and Americans making fun of Bush.

This was an experience. I don't know how to describe it in words, but it made me think of North Koreans in a more humane way. Loved seeing sorta deepdive into their culture. Thank you.
